Stackbacks Open Source Budget Application
There is a stackbacks open source budget application in the works.
The core of this idea is to automate the manual tasks being done in the budgeting spreadsheet. If you are interested in working on this project, please contact me at s@stackbacks.com or leave your ideas in the comments.

Would this be a web-based application? What languages are you planning on using?

We were looking at doing it in .NET, making it open source.
I would prefer to stay away from the Web, as I personally don’t want to publish my financial information to anywhere other than my computer. But the advantages of a web based application could be great … cross browser compatability, etc. Hmmm … that just gave me an idea.
Imagine a web app that worked like this:
You UPLOAD your data file, manipulate your data, then download the new data file.
Hmmm … maybe we could do it in Flash, and users would have the option to download the SWF file, and run the app locally.

As a .NET application, I have access to some objects “out-of-the-box” that would be a pain to recreate as a web-app from scratch.
Macromedia Flash is starting to look pretty good…

Well, I don’t know Flash… but I have been wanting to learn it…
